How we started

How we started

Inclusion Glasgow was established in 1996 by Simon Duffy who was quickly joined by Frances Brown, primarily to provide supported living to people who had been in long term institutional care especially those from Lennox Castle Hospital. The organisation assisted people to move into their own homes and to give them as much power as possible in the process of planning their move and in what happened after they moved.

Inclusion Glasgow’s first service was established in July 1996 for a family with two boys with learning difficulties. The boys were helped to return home from an institution and the family controlled their own service supported by Inclusion Glasgow. The family were given help to buy a bigger house that was better suited to the boys’ needs. In this first year went on to support 13 people. Now today we support over 40 people.

Stay Small - Grow new

Inclusion Glasgow has always intended to stay a small organisation to ensure that a person centred approach and values stay real for all. The demand for services was still there and so Inclusion Glasgow helped to develop two other organisations, Partners for Inclusion and C-Change for Inclusion. Each supports a similar number of people to Inclusion Glasgow. Both of these organisations became independent companies in April 2004.

Inclusion Glasgow went on to support the development of an organisation called LEAF (Life, Employment and Friends) to promote employment opportunities and community networking. Inclusion Glasgow were also instrumental in supporting the growth of Neighbourhood Networks.
